Testosterone Propionate Injection Description1-4
Testosterone Propionate Injection is a compounded injectable testosterone ester medication consisting of testosterone propionate. It has been used in testosterone replacement therapy to treat male hypogonadism. Testosterone propionate has a half-life of approximately 4.5 days.3,4 Testosterone that has not been esterified has a half-life of as short as 10 minutes. Thus, the esterification process provides for a longer duration of effect for the testosterone.
Mechanism of Action1-4
The esterification of testosterone propionate occurs on the 17b carbon of the testosterone structure. The testosterone propionate ester extends the duration of action and is useful for less frequent, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injections. Once administered, the testosterone propionate ester is cleaved, releasing free testosterone into the bloodstream. Testosterone then binds to androgen receptors in various tissues, exerting anabolic and androgenic effects. Testosterone has a role in influencing the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics, stimulation of muscle and bone growth, and regulation of libido and mood.
