Product Overview

Biotin / Finasteride / Minoxidil Capsules Description

Biotin Description1,2,3

Biotin (Vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as a cofactor to catalyze various cellular reactions including metabolism of fats, proteins and sugars. Biotin has effects on our DNA and how our body expresses genes, in areas such as fetal development, and regulating synthesis and breakdown of fats, proteins and sugars (in addition to directly catalyzing the reactions). Deficiency of biotin is rare with a regular diet; however, biotin deficiency may manifest as: dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infections, skin rashes, fine and brittle hair, and hair loss or total alopecia. Although true biotin deficiency is rare, there is no evidence of harm with biotin supplementation.

Finasteride Description 4,5,6

Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, has been shown to benefit patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia. Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects men over the age of 50 years old. Finasteride has also been shown to benefit androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness).

Minoxidil Description7,8

Minoxidil is a vasodilatory compound originally developed as an oral antihypertensive agent. It was found to stimulate hair growth (from the observation of hypertrichosis (excessive, abnormal hair growth) in patients taking oral minoxidil) and was subsequently FDA approved for androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss).

Mechanism of Action1-8

Biotin serves as a coenzyme that binds directly to four enzymes that are responsible for the synthesis of macronutrients (fat, protein, sugar) and other molecules.  Biotin also regulates our genes by effecting the way in which our DNA is presented within cells (histone modification), this has been shown to influence immune function and fetal development.

Finasteride is an analog of testosterone that acts as a competitive, specific inhibitor of type II 5-alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone to the potent androgen 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone. The type II 5-alpha-reductase isozyme is primarily found in prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides, and hair follicles, as well as liver. Dihydrotestosterone has been shown to increase prostate growth and can lead to hair thinning. Finasteride has been shown to shrink the prostate to improve urinary flow and in scalp lowers dihydrotestosterone to slow hair loss and promote regrowth.

Minoxidil has many mechanisms in supporting hair growth:

  • Potassium channel opening: Minoxidil is a K⁺-ATP channel opener, which may result in vasodilation and enhanced blood flow to hair follicles.
  • Prolongation of the hair cycle: It may extend the growth phase of the hair cycle, leading to increased follicle size and more robust hair shafts.
  • Activation of prostaglandins: May indirectly affect prostaglandin-mediated signaling to stimulate hair follicle activity.
  • Upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF): Promotes angiogenesis in dermal papillae, which may improve follicular nourishment.

Biotin Adverse Reactions1,2,3

  • There are no documented adverse reactions to biotin supplementation.

Finasteride Adverse Reactions 4,5,6

  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Ejaculatory disorders (e.g., reduced volume)
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Gynecomastia

Minoxidil Adverse Reactions7,8

Common

Topical minoxidil is generally well tolerated but may cause local effects:

  • Scalp irritation, dryness, flaking
  • Erythema or contact dermatitis (more common with propylene glycol-containing formulations)
  • Pruritus or burning sensation
  • Unwanted facial hair growth (esp. in women or if solution drips onto other areas)

Biotin Contraindications & Precautions1,2,3

Contraindications

  • There are no contraindications to biotin supplementation

Precautions

  • Biotin has been shown to interfere with lab results when taken as a supplement in higher doses, particularly hormone panels and especially thyroid hormone; always tell your healthcare provider if you are taking biotin, or any other supplements or medications.

Finasteride Contraindications & Precautions 4,5,6

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to risk of teratogenicity (can cause abnormalities in the external genitalia of male fetuses)
  • Hypersensitivity to finasteride or any component of the tablet

Precautions

  • Finasteride lowers serum PSA levels by ~50% after 6 months, which can mask early detection of prostate cancer.
  • Use cautiously in patients with hepatic dysfunction. The drug is metabolized extensively in the liver.

 Minoxidil Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to minoxidil
  • Women who are pregnant or nursing

Precautions

  • Cardiovascular disease including atherosclerosis and heart failure
  • Those with liver or renal dysfunction
  • Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F)
  • Protect from moisture and light
  • Keep in a tightly closed container
  • Women should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant because of the possibility of absorption of finasteride and the subsequent potential risk to a male fetus.
