Bremelanotide is a melanocortin receptor (MCR) agonist. It is indicated for the treatment of premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) as characterized by low sexual desire that causes marked distress or interpersonal difficulty and is NOT due to:
Bremelanotide, a MCR agonist, non-selectively works on several receptor subtypes MC1R-MC5R in the central nervous system. MC1R and MC4R are thought to be the most relevant. MC4R are commonly present in the central nervous system. Although the mechanism of action is not fully elucidated, the drug is thought to activate pathways in the brain that are involved in sexual responses. [1,2]
