T3 Oral Formulation Description1,2
Oral T3 is compounded in both immediate and sustained release formulations. T3 functions similarly to the endogenous thyroid hormone triiodothyronine. It comes as an oral capsule and is indicated for use as replacement or supplemental therapy in the treatment of hypothyroidism. There are two forms of thyroid in the human body triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Triiodothyronine is more biologically active. T4 is converted to T3 in the body. In addition, T3 is faster-acting than T4 and can be used for patients who do not convert T4 to T3 well.
T3 is indicated for the treatment of:
Mechanism of Action1
Triiodothyronine exerts its physiologic actions through control of DNA transcription and protein synthesis. It does this by entering into the cell nucleus and binding to thyroid receptor proteins attached to DNA. This hormone nuclear receptor complex activates gene transcription and synthesis of messenger RNA and cytoplasmic proteins. The physiological actions of thyroid hormones are produced predominantly by T3.
