Phendimetrazine, a stimulant of the sympathetic central nervous system, is used as an anorectic. It is a schedule III-controlled substance. The drug closely mimics amphetamine in activity and structure. The drug has been approved since 1959. It is FDA approved for the following indication:
In the management of exogenous obesity as a short-term adjunct (a few weeks) in a regimen of weight reduction based on caloric restriction in patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m or higher who have not responded to appropriate weight reducing regimen (diet and/or exercise) alone.
Mechanism of Action1,2
Phendimetrazine predominantly acts in the central nervous system (CNS), within the hypothalamus and limbic systems, where it works on appetite regulation.
