Product Overview

Biotin Capsules Description 1,2,3

Biotin (Vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as a cofactor to catalyze various cellular reactions including metabolism of fats, proteins and sugars. Biotin has effects on our DNA and how our body expresses genes, in areas such as fetal development, and regulating synthesis and breakdown of fats, proteins and sugars (in addition to directly catalyzing the reactions). Deficiency of biotin is rare with a regular diet; however, biotin deficiency may manifest as: dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infections, skin rashes, fine and brittle hair, and hair loss or total alopecia. Although true biotin deficiency is rare, there is no evidence of harm with biotin supplementation.

Finasteride Tablet Description 4,5,6

Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, has been shown to benefit patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia. Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects men over the age of 50 years old. Finasteride has also been shown to benefit androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness).

Biotin Mechanism of Action1,2,3

Biotin serves as a coenzyme that binds directly to four enzymes that are responsible for the synthesis of macronutrients (fat, protein, sugar) and other molecules.  Biotin also regulates our genes by effecting the way in which our DNA is presented within cells (histone modification), this has been shown to influence immune function and fetal development.

Finasteride Mechanism of Action 4,5,6

Finasteride is an analog of testosterone that acts as a competitive, specific inhibitor of type II 5-alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone to the potent androgen 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone. The type II 5-alpha-reductase isozyme is primarily found in prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides, and hair follicles, as well as liver. Dihydrotestosterone has been shown to increase prostate growth and can lead to hair thinning. Finasteride has been shown to shrink the prostate to improve urinary flow and in the scalp lowers dihydrotestosterone to slow hair loss and promote regrowth.

Biotin Adverse Reactions1,2,3

  • There are no documented adverse reactions to biotin supplementation.

Finasteride Adverse Reactions 4,5,6

  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Ejaculatory disorders (e.g., reduced volume)
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Gynecomastia

Biotin Contraindications & Precautions1,2,3

Contraindications

  • There are no contraindications to biotin supplementation

Precautions

  • Biotin has been shown to interfere with lab results when taken as a supplement in higher doses, particularly hormone panels and especially thyroid hormone; always tell your healthcare provider if you are taking biotin, or any other supplements or medications.

Finasteride Contraindications & Precautions 4,5,6

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to risk of teratogenicity (can cause abnormalities in the external genitalia of male fetuses)
  • Hypersensitivity to finasteride or any component of the tablet

Precautions

  • Finasteride lowers serum PSA levels by ~50% after 6 months, which can mask early detection of prostate cancer.
  • Use cautiously in patients with hepatic dysfunction. The drug is metabolized extensively in the liver.
