Product Overview

NP Thyroid® is a medication derived from porcine thyroid glands. It is a combination of levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3) that has been desiccated. There are approximately 38 mcg (T4) and 9 mcg (T3) in each 60 mg thyroid extract. There can be some variation in the amount of T4 and T3 in thyroid hormone extracts. Because of the inconsistent amounts of T4 and T3 in the extract, it initiated  development of synthetic T4 preparations.

Indications include:

As replacement/supplemental therapy in patients with hypothyroidism of any etiology (except transient hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis). [1,3]

T4 is the major active thyroid hormone. The body converts T4 to T3 for metabolic activity. The T4 and T3 provided in Thyroid NP mimic the actions of thyroid hormones normally produced in the human body.   Thyroid hormones in the body provide growth and development of tissues.  The actions of thyroid hormones are extensive, including influencing both catabolic and anabolic metabolism. Thyroid hormones influence the growth and maturation of tissues and increase energy expenditure. NP Thyroid® can be used in patients if they have impairment in T4-to-T3 conversion. [1,2]
