Arginine / Citrulline / Taurine / Vitamin C Description1,2,3,4
This supplement combines three amino acids: L-arginine, L-citrulline, and taurine, with vitamin C to support cardiovascular health, nitric oxide production, and provide antioxidant protection. These supplements are used together to enhance blood flow, reduce oxidative stress, and support exercise performance.
Mechanism of Action1,2,3,4
L-Arginine is an amino acid naturally found in red meat, poultry, fish, and dairy. It is necessary for making proteins and is commonly used to promote circulation. The body converts to nitric oxide (NO) which relaxes blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow.
L-Citrulline is converted into L-arginine in the kidneys, increasing nitric oxide (NO) production through a different pathway than L-arginine alone. It is used to support exercise and weight training.
Taurine is important in several metabolic processes in the body, including stabilizing cell membranes in electrically active tissues, such as the brain and heart, and supporting neuronal development.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin renowned for its potent antioxidant properties. As a key player in the bodies defense system, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals (unstable molecules that contribute to cellular stress and damage). By reducing oxidative stress, vitamin C supports healthy aging, enhances immune function, and may improve effectiveness of vasodilators such as nitric oxide (NO).
Adverse Reactions1,2,3,4
L-Arginine is generally well tolerated but may cause abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, flushing and low blood pressure when taken in high doses.
L-Citrulline is generally well-tolerated but may cause gastrointestinal upset or heartburn in some users.
Taurine is generally well tolerated but can cause constipation, diarrhea, and dyspepsia.
Vitamin C is generally well tolerated but may cause heartburn, headache, nausea, vomiting, esophagitis, stomach cramps and diarrhea when consumed in excess (RDA depends on age and condition), and it may increase the risk of kidney stones in susceptible individuals.
Contraindications & Precautions1,2,3,4
L-Arginine – Do not use long term in pregnancy. Do not take when breastfeeding. Do not take if you have a rare genetic disorder Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency (GAMT). Do not take L-arginine if you have had a recent heart attack. Do not take if you have kidney disease, stop taking at least 2 weeks before any surgeries.
L-Citrulline has limited safety data in pregnant or breastfeeding women, so use is not advised without medical oversight. Use caution if you take medications for high blood pressure, as L-citrulline may lower your blood pressure.
Taurine – Do not take Taurine supplements if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use caution if you take medications for high blood pressure, taurine may lower your blood pressure.
Vitamin C is generally considered safe when consumed within the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for each age and condition category. Taking too much vitamin C may cause kidney stones. Use caution in kidney disease. Do not take if you have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
