Glutathione, a combination of three amino acids (cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid), is a strong antioxidant that can be prescribed at the direction of your health care professional. It is involved in many regulatory functions in the body and helps to decrease toxins in the body and may improve immune function. It is found in large quantities in many cells in the body (1-10 millimoles/L). In the article, “Glutathione!, the many functions of glutathione are described as follows:1-3
Clinically, glutathione is thought to critical for the following disease and body processes”1
Glutathione has many mechanisms in the body to support its role as an antioxidant, a detoxifier, and its involvement in many enzymatic processes including redox reactions. Glutathione antioxidant effects include glutathione peroxidase-catalyzed reactions with the removal of hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxides, and peroxynitrite. Glutathione detoxifies by using glutathione transferases. These glutathione transferases also have antioxidant properties. Glutathione binds harmful substances, including heavy metals (like mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic), toxins from mold (mycotoxins), synthetic chemicals, and harmful free radicals. It neutralizes these toxins, making them more water-soluble and easier for the body to eliminate through urine or bile. Glutathione is made in the cytosol of the cell by two enzymes. The first enzyme is glutamate cysteine ligase. Glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) catalyzes ligation of cysteine and glutamate forming γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-GC). The second enzyme is glutathione synthase. Glutathione synthase adds glycine to γ-GC resulting in glutathione formation.1-4
