Product Overview

Valproic Acid Spray Description1-4

Valproic acid is an antiepileptic medication for treatment of partial and absence seizures. Although valproic acid is commonly used as an antiepileptic medication, there is data to support that valproic acid may facilitate hair growth in patients with androgenetic alopecia. The benefits of topical valproic acid on hair growth have been shown in an in vitro culture model, in a mice model, and in men with androgenetic alopecia in a randomized controlled trial. In the randomized controlled trial, valproic acid was shown to increase hair count in men with androgenetic alopecia.

Mechanism of Action1-4

The mechanism of how valproic acid stimulates hair growth is related to intracellular pathways and targets. Coordination of signaling between cells is important for formation and maintenance of the hair follicle. β-Catenin is critical for the development and growth of hair follicles through Wnt signaling. Without Wnt signals, β-catenin is phosphorylated by glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3 and then degraded. Inhibiting GSK-3 may enhance hair growth. Valproic acid may inhibit GSK-3 to facilitate hair growth.
