Enclomiphene citrate is a nonsteroidal selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) derived from clomiphene citrate. Unlike clomiphene, which is a racemic mixture of enclomiphene (trans-isomer) and zu-clomiphene (cis-isomer), enclomiphene contains only the trans-isomer. Because of evidence to stimulate testosterone production, it is being considered for the management of secondary hypogonadism in men, particularly if preservation of fertility is desired. 1-4
Enclomiphene works by antagonizing estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, thereby reducing negative feedback inhibition on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This leads to: 1-4
